I've had clients come in having done everything right and clients who, bless them, shaved that morning. The difference in how their appointments go is night and day. Good waxing prep isn't complicated, but it does matter — and most of it happens before you ever walk through my door. Here's exactly how I tell my clients to prepare, and why each step actually makes a difference.

Give Your Hair Time to Grow

I know. Nobody wants to hear "let it grow out." But this is the one I can't emphasize enough because it's the most common reason a first appointment doesn't deliver the results someone hoped for. Wax needs something to grip. For a clean, thorough removal, you're looking at roughly two to three weeks of growth — about a quarter inch. If the hair is too short, the wax can't grab it properly, which means patchy results and, honestly, more discomfort because we end up going over the same area more than once. If you've been shaving, put the razor down about three weeks before your appointment and just let things be. I promise it's worth it.

Exfoliate — But Not the Day Of

Light exfoliation two days before your appointment is one of the best things you can do for your skin. It clears away the layer of dead skin cells that can trap hair and block the wax from getting a clean grip. It also helps reduce the chance of ingrown hairs afterward. The key word is light. A gentle scrub or a soft exfoliating cloth is plenty. You're not trying to resurface your skin — you're just giving it a little refresh. And stop the day before your appointment; coming in with freshly scrubbed, sensitive skin can actually make the service more uncomfortable.

Skip the Coffee Beforehand

This one surprises people, but it's real. Caffeine is a stimulant, and it can temporarily increase your skin's sensitivity and even cause a bit of tension in the body. Neither of those things is helpful when you're trying to stay relaxed during a wax. I'm not saying you can never have your morning coffee — just maybe don't have two of them right before you come in. Water is a much better call leading up to your appointment. Hydrated skin is more pliable and tends to respond better to waxing overall.

Wear Something Loose and Easy

This one's simple but easy to overlook, especially if you're coming straight from work. After a wax — particularly a Brazilian or body wax — your skin is going to be a little sensitive, and the last thing it needs is tight waistbands, rough seams, or constricting fabric rubbing against it for the rest of the day.

Loose cotton is ideal. Flowy pants, a relaxed dress, a soft shorts-and-tee situation. Whatever you'd wear on a lazy Sunday works perfectly. Your skin will thank you.

Be Careful With Skincare Products Leading Up to Your Appointment

If you use retinol, strong exfoliating acids (like glycolic or salicylic), or any kind of prescription topical, give those a pause for a few days before your service — especially in the area being waxed. These products thin and sensitize the skin, which can lead to more irritation or, in some cases, the skin actually lifting with the wax. Not a fun outcome. On the day of, skip the lotion or body oil in the area being treated as well. Moisturized skin can prevent the wax from adhering properly, which brings us right back to the patchy results problem. If you're not sure whether something you're using is a concern, just mention it when you book or when you arrive. I'd much rather know ahead of time so we can adjust if needed.

A Little Prep Goes a Long Way

None of this is difficult — it's just a matter of thinking ahead a few days before your appointment. And the payoff is real: cleaner removal, less discomfort, better results, and skin that recovers quickly. I genuinely love when clients come in prepared because it means we can focus entirely on getting a great result, rather than working around something that could have easily been avoided.
